Terrapin Rock Reservation Guidelines

The Painting Process

  • Painting must take place between 4p and 8p on the school day BEFORE your reserved date. (For example, if you reserve a Monday, paint the Rock the Friday before.) The school gates are locked at 8p daily.

  • Only the Terrapin Rock should be painted. Do not paint any other surfaces on the school property – sidewalks, grass, building, lamp posts, etc.

  • When you are done painting, clean up all materials you brought with you and dispose of them at your home. Leave nothing behind except the painted Rock.

Acceptable Messages and Images

  • Character Counts in St. Johns County schools! All wording and pictures painted on the Rock should be affirmative, caring, nurturing, positive, and in good taste.

  • Words and symbols may NOT include:

    • Foul and/or discriminatory language or pictures

    • Religious statements and/or symbols

    • Political statements and/or symbols

  • PTO reserves the right to remove paint from or paint over the Rock and not provide a refund if the above guidelines are not followed.

Painting Materials

  • The person or people reserving the Rock are responsible for supplying their own labor and painting materials.

  • A typical supply list includes:

    • Latex (exterior) paint – 1 or 2 quarts for the background color

    • Secondary color(s) latex (exterior) paint – For the message and/or images

    • “Rough” roller – Best for covering the rock with the background color

    • Small (1”) brushes or sponges – For lettering and/or images

    • Chalk – To write and/or trace letters and pictures before covering with paint

    • Large trash bags – For removal for all supplies and trash

  • NO spray paint is allowed. Also, do NOT use puffy paint, glue, chemicals, stickers, glitter, etc. on the Rock.

Refunds / Cancellations

  • Mark your calendar once you reserve the Terrapin Rock. If you cannot paint the Rock at your reserved day/time, your reservation cannot be rescheduled and your money cannot be refunded. The money is considered a donation to the TCA PTO.

  • If weather is inclement on your painting day, bring an umbrella and appropriate clothing. PTO cannot offer refunds due to weather.
